Chrissy Teigen credits Ozempic for helping aftermath of losing her baby

In the aftermath of a heartbreaking miscarriage in 2020, Chrissy Teigen revealed she struggled with severe image issues.

So much so, that the TV host turned to the weight loss drug Ozempic, which she now acknowledges as having transformed her life.

To refresh your memory, in 2020, she and her husband, musician John Legend, announced they were expecting a baby boy.

However, at 20 weeks, Teigen's health took a drastic turn. After multiple medical consultations, she was diagnosed with a partial placental abruption, a condition where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall unexpectedly.

This not only deprived her son of vital oxygen and nutrients but also left the model hospitalised due to severe bleeding.

Despite the doctors' efforts, 39-year-old Teigen's pregnancy was terminated, as the baby could not survive, and her own life was in danger.

Speaking on her Self Conscious podcast this week, where she discussed her subsequent reliance on Ozempic, the mother-of-four began her surprising revelation by reflecting on her loss.

"I had two babies and then I lost a baby at just over 20 weeks," Teigen recounted in her conversation with author Johann Hari. "Afterwards, my body felt completely stuck, as if in a state of shock.

"When I lost that baby at 20 weeks, I had probably gained an extra 40 pounds that I was uncomfortable with."

Feeling exhausted from her low self-esteem, she decided to try Ozempic, hoping the Type-2 diabetes medication would help her lose some weight. While she chose not to disclose when she started the medication, she did share that she used the injectables for a year.

Initially noticing no results for the first three to four months, she eventually began to feel better about herself.

Teigen went on to mention, however, that the weight loss also reminded her of everything she had lost the previous year.

"All of a sudden, I was finally able to lose the weight that constantly reminded me of the baby I had lost," she confessed. "Mentally, I felt better because I was no longer trapped in a deep depression, seeing a pregnant belly with no baby in it.

"I also felt liberated from the prison of thinking about food in negative ways. Good food in bad ways."

She continued: "It’s incredible what it did for me, not just physically, but mentally."

Sharing a clip of the podcast episode on Instagram, Teigen expressed her wish to remove the stigma surrounding the medication.

"It’s time to discuss that controversial buzzword. The one that gossip writers love because it’s such a polarizing, click-worthy topic that really gets people talking (and judging)," she wrote, adding: "Ozempic."

The star went on to summarize her decision, telling her followers: "I was living in a body that didn’t feel like mine, with absolutely nothing to celebrate—just the constant reminder that this body, which once carried life for 20 weeks, was now just a…sad reminder."
